Become a Foster

You don’t have to adopt to change an animal’s life. Sometimes, you just have to open your door.

Why Foster?

A foster home can change everything. Fosters give vulnerable animals the time, safety, and individualized care they need to decompress, grow, heal, and prepare for adoption. And when you open your home, you make it possible for us to say yes to the next animal who needs us.

How Fostering Works

What We Provide

FBR coordinates veterinary care, adoption promotion, and the resources your foster animal needs. We provide supplies whenever possible and are always available to answer questions, troubleshoot challenges, and support you throughout the foster.

What You Provide

You provide a safe, appropriate space, daily care, patience, and plenty of love. You’ll also help us get to know your foster’s personality, habits, and needs so we can find the right forever home.

You’re Never Doing It Alone

Whether you’re an experienced foster or completely new to rescue, you’ll have FBR’s support throughout the process. We work with you to make sure you and your foster are set up for success.

Thinking about adopting your foster? We hold foster-to-adopt animals before opening them to public inquiries — one week for puppies and kittens, or one month for adult cats and dogs. After that, approved adopters are considered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Ways to Foster

There’s a way to foster for almost every home and schedule.

  • Puppies & Kittens — Foster puppies or kittens who are old enough to be separated from their mother and cared for as they grow, socialize, and prepare for adoption.
  • Moms & Litters — Provide a safe place for a pregnant or nursing mother and/or her litter to grow together. We keep neonates with their mother whenever possible rather than placing them individually before they are ready for adoption.
  • Bottle Babies — For experienced fosters who are able to provide the intensive, round-the-clock care that orphaned or rejected neonates require.
  • Seniors & Special Needs — Give an older, medically fragile, or special-needs animal a comfortable place to receive the extra attention and care they need.
  • Adult Animals — Foster healthy adult dogs or cats while they wait for their forever homes. You’ll help us learn more about their personality, habits, and ideal home.
  • Recovery & Medical — Help an animal recover from illness, injury, surgery, or another temporary medical need in a calm home environment.
  • Short-Term & Foster Relief — Not ready for a long-term commitment? Short-term fostering can help cover a weekend, vacation, or gap between foster homes, giving another foster the support they need to keep saying yes.
